Charli XCX on Chaotic Makeup, Chic Eye Bags, and the Lip Gloss That Feels Like ‘Party 4 U’

This past weekend at Coachella, Charli xcx brought back the party with some of her favorite performers, including Troye Sivan, Lorde, and Billie Eilish, all while wearing her signature beauty look of a smoky eye and free-flowing hair. Performing hits like “Girl, So Confusing” and “Guess,” the face of Valentino Beauty knew the question on everyone’s mind: What’s next for Charli after an energizing “Brat Summer”?

The screens behind her seemed to hint that it’s not finished yet, with messages such as: “I don’t know who I am if it’s over???” to an image of the Brat cover in flames. No one other than Charli knows for sure, but she will have a busy year ahead, including guest-starring on Overcompensating, Benito Skinner’s new Prime Video series produced by A24.

Before her set, ELLE briefly caught up with Charli, who appears in the new campaign for Valentino Beauty’s Puffer Gloss and who describes her own beauty look as “chaotic chic.” Here, she talks about her preferred blurry lip look, not covering her eye bags, and why her song “party 4 u” goes best with lip gloss.

I’ve read that you never use under-eye concealer. Still true?

Yeah, still true. I like eye bags, I think they’re chic.

What is your current routine?

I usually start with just listening to my favorite music in my towel for like 20 minutes. Then when it comes to the makeup, it’s all about the smudged lip and a messy black eye look.

What was one of your most memorable party nights?

I’m afraid I can’t share that information!

What things are you into right now?

Making movies and posting on TikTok.

What is your approach to writing music for TV and film compared to your own albums?

With my albums, I’m writing about how I’m feeling most of the time. But with film, it’s like, I get to be part of the backdrop or the soundtrack to someone else’s story, which is interesting.

I know you love leftover, party eye makeup. What is your approach to lip makeup?

A similar approach, to be honest. I like to slightly over line my lips then blur the product out a bit. Then of course, I always finish with a gloss.

What do you like about the Puffer Gloss? What song do you think it goes best with?

I love how the Puffer Gloss catches the light and is so sparkly. If it were a song, it would definitely be “party 4 u.” More is more! I love reapplying the Puffer Gloss loads of times throughout the night so my lips are super shiny, plumped, and extra. My favorite shade is Moonlight Crush. I’ve always been into a dark lip. I find it really sexy and chic.
