In ELLE.com’s series Office Hours, we ask people in powerful positions to take us through their first jobs, worst jobs, and everything in between. This month, we spoke with actress, producer, and beauty founder Jennifer Aniston. In addition to her legendary role as Rachel Green on Friends and Alex Levy on The Morning Show, Aniston also created Lolavie, a science and plant-based haircare line. Named after the French word for “life” and her nickname (in addition to the name of her first car upon moving to California), the brand is vegan and cruelty-free. The full range of products now includes a Peptide Plumping Spray. Here, she talks about how she decompresses from a stressful day, the hype behind those salmon sperm facials, and her special air-dry hair technique.
My first job
I would go to the grocery store for this sweet old lady who lived down the hall from me. She would ask me, “Do you want to make some money?” and I would go to D’Agostinos to get her groceries. She was adorable. After that, I worked at Sedutto, a brand of ice cream from the ’80s. My first acting acting job was a Bob’s Big Boy commercial. It’s what got me my SAG card.
My worst job
When I first moved to California, I did telemarketing for two weeks. I was trying to sell a timeshare in the Poconos. When I got my first acting job, I was able to say, “See ya, Poconos.”
My best job
They’ve all been my best job. I love all of them. I have to say, Friends is going to have a dear place in my heart until the end of time.
My relationship with my hair
It’s an ongoing conversation. We talk on a weekly basis. We always have to check in with each other. When I was younger, my hair was really long and lush. Then my mom gave me permission to get my first haircut, and that set me back a really long time because it couldn’t grow it back. I got into hair color in high school, and then started to damage my hair. As we grow up, our hair changes. If you have grays that start to come in, you’re like, “Okay, what are we doing now? What are the changes now? Oh, it’s falling out now?” All of those fun things start to happen.
Why I created a plumping hair product
For volume! I am so excited about this product. It took a couple of different rounds of trials [to complete]. We wanted the perfect texture that didn’t have too much, or not enough, grit. Thank God I have all these wonderful and willing girlfriends that will participate in my many rounds of samples. Those who have thinner hair, or want that lift with blowout, came back with raving reviews. I’m very in love with it. You can use it on dry hair, but it’s also good when it is wet and towel-dried. Spray it in the root and wherever you want fullness.
My current hair routine
It is usually the Lolavie Restorative Shampoo and Conditioner. I just love mixing all the different products. I will use the Detangler, put it up in a towel, and then my Leave-In Conditioner. I’ll add a couple drops of the Oil through my hair brush. I’ll brush that through, leave it, and let it go natural and clip it into a certain type of shape. I’ve got a very aggressive hairline with cowlicks, so I usually clip my hair in certain places. It’s also curly, so I tend to do a couple of different braids and then rubber band it at the bottom and let it dry. Or I’ll just give it a blow-dry.
My workout philosophy
A lot of trial and error. With each injury, I started to realize what worked for me. I thought for a long time that you had to really hurt yourself and run yourself into the ground for up to an hour and a half each day. Then, as time went on and I discovered more about what was needed to keep myself fit, I realized that I didn’t. I just wish I had known that I didn’t have to break my body in my 20s and 30s in order to be fit and healthy.
On salmon sperm
By the way, I did that one time, four years ago. And now, I am seeing it everywhere.
