Despite being a bona fide bag lady, the last thing I ever considered investing in was a quality work tote. Simply put, I didn’t feel the need for one when I had a perfectly good, roomy, and durable canvas option in my arsenal. But, after schlepping a heavy, bulky bag to more than one professional occasion, that particular style started to lose its luster. I realized the time had come for an upgrade to a sleek, more polished pick. But, if you’re like me—someone who not only understands the investment in a designer handbag (financially and emotionally) but also the fact that this is an accessory you’ll use every single day—indecision paralysis will undoubtedly follow. And even more so when you’re seeking a work bag that’ll transcend seasons and last you a long time.
Eventually, I came across the DeMellier Vancouver Tote. I was already well-acquainted with the London-based label’s bestselling New York Tote, so I knew I would be getting a high-quality leather bag—I just didn’t quite expect such a timeless, minimalist style to become my go-to for nearly everything.
Let it be known to the world that I—and the New York transit system, for that matter—am not the kindest to my daily carries. I have spilled many a coffee thermos and squished too many granola bars to count in my carry-all. But looking at this bag, you would never know. And just to drive that idea home, I’ve received countless compliments on it for all the post-work events I’ve attended, solely based on the look—and more importantly, the feel—of it.
As a work bag, it fits my 15-inch laptop with room to spare for a water bottle or thermos, my toiletry bag, and a few other everyday necessities. I’ve been known to stuff my bags to the brim, and this tote will hold all the essentials—without allowing extra space for the things I might need and never actually use.
Of course, this is more than just a work tote; there are thoughtful features on the inside that allow it to stand up to some of the best designer totes on the market. In the two slip pockets, I store my keys, phone, and wallet just within arm’s reach—which is very useful on my daily commute. There’s also a zippered pocket, which is where I keep my jewelry and other small valuables.
I could go on, but really, you simply need to experience this bag for yourself. Just trust me on this: You’ll be using The Vancouver Tote every single day. And just in case you want some other elevated options, shop more office-approved (and editor-loved) leather tote bags from DeMellier below.
