Raw hem treatments have been a slow burn in fashion for years – celebrated for their undone, organic quality and the way they age differently on every garment. But a new problem is surfacing in finishing rooms and among home sewists alike: certain pigments and coating agents are interacting with exposed fabric edges in ways that no one fully anticipated. The culprit drawing unexpected attention is the daubing technique associated with Eton College’s Wall Game, a centuries-old tradition involving chalk, clay, and pigmented mixtures pressed into players’ calico smocks.
The Wall Game’s calico daubing process uses a semi-liquid pigment application – part chalk slip, part iron-bearing clay – that was never designed with textile longevity in mind. When those same pigment formulas, or close synthetic approximations of them, migrate into craft and fashion finishing contexts, they interact with raw, unfinished fabric edges in ways that are difficult to reverse. The staining is subtle at first, but it compounds over time and washing cycles, producing uneven bleed lines and a brittleness along the hem that undermines exactly the aesthetic rawness the treatment was meant to preserve.

What Calico Daubing Actually Does to Fiber
Calico, as a base fabric, is an unbleached, minimally processed cotton that retains a high degree of natural sizing – the starch-like residue left from the weaving process. That residue acts like a sponge for iron oxides and chalk-based pigments, pulling them deep into the fiber structure rather than sitting on the surface. When the hem is left raw, without a turned edge or bound finish, the exposed weft and warp threads at the cut line have no protective layer. Pigment absorption at those points is concentrated and uneven, creating the staining pattern that finishers are now documenting.
The issue becomes more complicated because raw hem treatments are often chosen precisely because they fray and evolve. The fraying process exposes fresh fiber continuously, and each newly exposed thread draws pigment inward from adjacent areas. This means a hem that looks acceptable at the point of finishing can develop visible tide marks and color migration over the course of weeks, particularly if the garment is worn in humid conditions or washed without a cold, gentle cycle. The stain doesn’t announce itself immediately – it creeps.

The Specific Chemistry Behind the Bleeding
Iron oxide pigments, which are central to the earthy red and ochre tones characteristic of Wall Game daubing, are notoriously difficult to remove from cellulose fibers. Unlike synthetic dyes, which bond at a molecular level and can sometimes be stripped with the right agent, iron oxides physically embed themselves in the fiber’s interstices. On a finished hem – folded, stitched, or bound – the pigment load is distributed across multiple fabric layers. On a raw hem, all that pigment concentration sits at a single exposed edge.
Chalk-based components in the daubing mixture introduce a secondary problem. Chalk is alkaline, and repeated contact with an alkaline substance weakens cotton fiber over time by disrupting the hydrogen bonds within the cellulose chains. The practical result is a hem that not only stains but becomes brittle and prone to accelerated fraying – not the gradual, deliberate fray that raw hem aesthetics depend on, but a ragged, irregular breakdown that reads as damage rather than design.
This reaction is not limited to authentic Wall Game calico. Craft suppliers and fabric dyers working with iron-rich natural pigments and chalk paint bases – both of which have grown popular in DIY textile finishing – are producing similar chemical conditions. A garment dipped in or brushed with a chalk-and-oxide mixture and then left with raw hems is essentially replicating the Wall Game daubing environment, even if unintentionally. The fashion context is different; the chemistry is the same.
Water plays an amplifying role. When the garment gets wet, the pigment-laden chalk solution becomes mobile again. Capillary action along the raw thread ends pulls the mixture further up the fabric, extending the stain zone. Cold water slows this process; warm water accelerates it significantly. This is why garments treated with daubing-style techniques and finished with raw hems often show their worst staining after the first wash, catching their owners off guard.
How Finishers Are Responding
Several finishing approaches are being adjusted to address this interaction without abandoning the raw hem aesthetic. One method involves applying a thin barrier coating – typically a diluted beeswax or carnauba wax solution – along the cut edge before any pigment treatment. The wax occupies the fiber’s surface pores, reducing pigment absorption at the most vulnerable points without altering the visual texture of the unfinished edge. It doesn’t eliminate staining entirely, but it slows the migration considerably.
A second approach works from the pigment side rather than the fabric side. Switching from iron oxide and chalk-based daubing pigments to acrylic-based alternatives with a lower pH reduces the alkaline damage to fiber while still delivering the matte, earthy finish that makes the Wall Game aesthetic appealing to fashion contexts. The trade-off is a slight reduction in the organic, aged character of the pigment layer – acrylic sits differently on fabric than mineral pigments do. For some designers, that trade-off is acceptable; for others, it defeats the purpose.

Where This Sits in the Broader Raw Hem Conversation
Raw hems are not going away. The aesthetic has moved well past trend status into something closer to a foundational technique in a range of markets – from luxury ready-to-wear to independent slow-fashion labels to home sewing. The problem the calico daubing interaction reveals is less about raw hems themselves and more about the gap between decorative finishing techniques and structural finishing knowledge. Pigment application and edge treatment are usually developed in separate creative conversations, and the chemistry of their intersection is rarely tested until something goes wrong on a finished garment.
The Wall Game connection is, in a sense, a useful frame. Eton’s calico smocks were never expected to last – they were working garments for a rough, seasonal ritual, and their deterioration was built into the purpose. Fashion garments operating under those same chemical conditions but carrying expectations of longevity and aesthetic consistency are being set up for a conflict the original tradition never had to resolve. The question now is whether the finishing industry catches up with the pigment trend before the staining becomes the story that defines it.
